President’s Message

For 62 years, the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association remains dedicated to supporting the outstanding men and women Massachusetts basketball coaches who work tirelessly to promote and protect high school basketball. In your dedicated work, you uphold the integrity of the game while teaching your players to realize their full potential both on and off the basketball court. Supporting your dedication, professionalism, and integrity along with promoting your collective vision, and voices, on issues that affect Massachusetts high school basketball will continue to be our focus.

I am excited to present our newest class of coaches who will be inducted into the Massachusetts Coaches Association Hall of Fame: Bob Crook of Braintree High School, Richard Gifford of Holbrook and Avon High Schools, and John Willis of Norwell High School. Each of these deserving coaches have dedicated over 30 years to coaching high school basketball. Coach Crook and Coach Willis have both won well over 400 games, and Coach Gifford has over 500 wins! Additionally, we will be recognizing 45 different coaches for excellence as “Coach of the Year,” “Assistant Coach of the Year,” and “Victory Club” milestones. These recipients and their families will be recognized on November 24th at our annual MBCA Hall of Fame Banquet at The College of the Holy Cross. As is the case every year, we rely on our membership to help us with this difficult task. Thank you for taking the time to nominate your fellow coaches. You can find the names of all of the coaches that we are recognizing within this newsletter.

With a new school year beginning, I encourage everyone to become a MBCA member for the upcoming season. Once again, we will offer a school membership package that enables you and your coaching staff to join our association at a very reasonable cost. Please encourage your administration to take advantage of this school package. However, if your school chooses not to register via the school membership package, we also offer an individual coaching membership that would enable you and your players the same member benefits. In addition to giving you a voice in collaboratively working to improve basketball in our state, your membership provides you, and your players eligibility for our end of season awards. Providing your players with the opportunity to be recognized makes your membership fee a worthwhile investment.

I would also encourage each of you to become involved in our association’s work. Members of our Executive Board are always in need of assistance, and we are always looking for league and district coordinators.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or ideas to bring to our board. I’m looking forward to working with you again this year.

Sincerely,
Steve Reno, MBCA President
Millbury Memorial High School Girls Basketball Coach
